Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger (or simply Messenger) is a messaging app and platform developed by Facebook. The service has over 1.2 billion total users as of April 2017.

 

Messenger supports a multitude of features, including quick replies and location prompts. It also has its own parametric codes that users can scan similarly to QR codes to easily start chatting with you. Below is scan code of SmartChat Messenger.  Setup Facebook Page 

In order to connect Facebook Messenger to your Space, you will need the following:

When a user visits your page and sends you a message, they will be connected to your Space.

Connect to Messenger

To add a new channel to an existing Space, navigate to Settings and select the blue "Add Channel" button under Manage Channels.

Under the Channel Connection menu, select the Messenger Logo and press the "Next" button. You will be prompted to connect with your Facebook Account, select your Facebook Page, and to pick a Greeting Message. You will also have an option to add a Facebook Chat Plugin.

Facebook Permission

 Press the blue "Connect with Facebook" button at the top and a window from Facebook should pop up and asks you for permissions. If you are not already logged into Facebook, it will ask you to log into your Facebook account first. Once you have granted permission, the Facebook window will close automatically.

Select a Facebook Page

On the Platform, you can now select your desired Facebook Page from the drop-down menu. Note that your connected account has to be an admin of the Facebook Page that you wish to connect.

You may also enter an optional Greeting Message. This will be shown when a new member of your audience first contacts you.

Add a Facebook Chat Plugin

If you wish to add an optional Facebook Chat Plugin to your website, select the respective checkbox. 

Customize the Plugin: This should take you to a menu where you can edit and customize your Facebook Customer Chat Plugin. 

Under the Website URL field, enter the URL of the website that you wish to install the widget to. You can enter multiple URLs if you plan on installing the widget to multiple websites.

You can also select a color of your choice for your Facebook Customer Chat Plugin using the interactive color picker.

Advanced Settings: To view more settings, you can click on the blue "Advanced Settings".

You can change how the dialog box of the Facebook Customer Chat Plugin will appear on your website under the Display Greeting Dialog field.
By default, it is set to "Show". This means that the greeting dialog box will automatically pop open after a set delay. You can change the delay in seconds under the Greeting Dialog Delay field. If the Greeting Dialog Delay is set to 0, then the greeting dialog box will not automatically open.

If you set the Greeting Dialog to "Hide", only the circular messenger icon will be visible and the dialog box will be hidden until manually opened by the user.
When the Display Greeting Dialog field is set to "Fade", the greeting dialog box will initially be closed. After a set delay as defined by the Greeting Dialog Delay field, the dialog box pops open. Then it will close itself once again after a few seconds.

Under Advanced Settings, you can also customize the greeting messages that will displayed to users that are either already logged into their Facebook account or are not currently logged in.
In addition, you can also add a reference code for when contacts message you from the Messenger chat widget.

Install the Plugin: After you are finished customizing the chat plugin, a script for the plugin will be generated. You will have to copy and paste the code just before the end of the <body> section on the backend of your website.

When you have filled in the required fields, go ahead and press the blue "Done" button. Your Space will now be connected to Facebook Messenger!

Refreshing Permissions

In rare cases, page permissions can be dropped by Facebook if the Facebook Page admin changes their password or due to other unexpected reasons.

In the event that you experience problems with sending messages or trouble with any of other the Facebook Messenger features, you may have to manually refresh your Facebook permissions.

To refresh your permissions, navigate to the Settings Module and scroll down to the Manage Channels section. Press the blue "Edit" button for the Facebook Messenger channel that you wish to refresh. This should open a menu where you can update your Messenger Channel.

Press the blue "Refresh Permissions" near the bottom of the menu. This should open a new window from Facebook where may need to log in to your Facebook account. Follow the instructions on screen to re-grant permissions to the Platform.

Once permissions have been refreshed, the window will close automatically.
